Crash was in deep shit now. Even he was smart enough to know that.

He called Locke directly. Locke answered on the second ring. He sounded out of breath, as if Crash had called while he was out for a run or something, which was possible. The whole team kept in shape. Their job could be physical sometimes, so it helped if they were all in good physical condition. Locke’s favorite thing to do was run.

“I need to disappear,” Crash said.

“Tell me.”

“The local cops came to Elijah’s room. The first time they questioned him. Acted weird, so I made them leave. This time they refused to leave. Told me no. Locke, they told me directly that they were working for Samuel Avery. They said something about Elijah and I lost it.”

“What the fuck did you do?” Lock asked in that tone he sometimes got when he wanted to kill someone.

“Kicked one of them and pointed a gun at the other one’s balls.”

“Jesus Christ, Crash. What the fuck made you do that?”

“They made a nasty comment about Elijah.”

Locke didn’t say a word for the longest time. When he finally did speak it was with a disbelieving tone. “So let me get this straight. You assaultedd not one, but two police officers because the called Elijah a name.

“Samuel wants something from Finn. He’ll kill me to get it,” Elijah said from his hospital bed, ripping the tape off his arm. He said it under his breath as if he were talking to himself, more than Crash.

Crash would have smiled under different circumstances at Elijah instinctively knowing they were getting ready to leave. Elijah pressed the button to call the nurse.

Crash turned to look at him, the gun still in his other hand. “Yeah, well, he’ll have to go through me.” Crash walked the couple steps it would take to get to Elijah. He just stood there, creating a barrier between Elijah and the door.

“We’re pretty sure Samuel Avery has a hit out on Justin, although we’re starting to suspect Avery is working with someone else. Samuel has a sex trafficking ring that is one of the biggest we’ve ever tried to bring down. That’s who kidnapped Aiden Newell, probably because of Aiden’s connection with Justin, most likely. We got most of Samuel Avery’s men, but he slipped out the back. We’re still looking,” Locke said to him, having heard what Elijah said.

“Well, Avery has cops on his payroll, Locke. And I just assaulted an officer, with his own gun. Right after I flashed him my badge. And all this happened in the hospital hallway where there are cameras. So yeah, it just became one great big clusterfuck.”

“Why didn’t you just let them take him? We could have gotten him back within an hour and we would have evidence against them. Now we’re fucked because it’s their word against yours.”

“Fuck you if you think I’m going to just turn him over.”

“Are you getting too close to this case?”

“Yes.”

“Do you need off the case?”

“No.
